WE ARE WATER:: unlike a traditional cause or concern that one can be for or against, We are Water honors the fundamental interconnectedness of all living beings and the planet. Since 2009, the artist shared photography campaigns that partnered with established environmental and humanity organization to support felt influence and care. However, this initiative, by design, includes all beings.
Stepping outside the encouraged cognitive framing of separation and form, this multi-disciplinary series relates through the experiential to activate appreciation around an equally valid Truth - one where water protectors, water polluters, and all of the infrastructural counterparts and players commune in their facted togetherness: all counting, all contributing. In this way, Water functions as both conduit and broader metaphor, one which is refracted through this codified landscape of the binaried material plane that we speak through and share.
In 2017, the first installment of We Are Water originated. Inspired through the sacred recognition of MníWičhóni Water is Life, and relating from structural linguistics and concerns on ego-formation/function, the Artist re-languaged the recognition to situate the approach from within/through the encouraged cognitive location of the prevalent and informing culture and language.
This work is photography based, but also includes supporting mediums: video, performance, and the photoshoot itself as an active and activated Art form. Previous installments have been shared Miami Art Basel Satellite Shows, House of Yes (en Loop), and Brooklyn Museum First Saturday’s Program. The 7th installment will be shared in New York during the Women’s Water Walk of 2026.
WE ARE WATER installment ii Bushwick Brooklyn 2017 - included in the installation of the portraits from WAWi, a room dedicated to the photoshoot. an invitation for all to be an active part of the campaign, which which all living beings are innately a part. in this way, the photoshoot itself was the art form: experiential in it’s realization and context. the artifacts of the exhibit, the portraits, were shared in the 3rd installment for Miami Art Basel’s satellite show ‘Art and Activism, the Feminine Perspective’ 2018 where the still images became a mosaic on the wall, which also included video portraits of Water Organizations related to both humanitarian and environmental crisis.
